When we read the below Quranic verses, we are often surprised at how the Quran explains this phenomenon during the 7th century, a time when scientific understanding was far less advanced than today. It is remarkable to consider that even then, the text provided insights that resonate with modern observations. Today, we have sophisticated satellites to observe this phenomenon, collecting data and revealing the intricate dance between night and day. The words used by the Quran, comparing the removal of the night by day, create a vivid imagery that can be likened to the careful tending of animal skins. If we take the animal to symbolize the night, we can envision the process of skinning the day away, revealing the dark night. Do you see this metaphor? سُوۡرَةُ الاٴعرَاف (Chapter Number 7 Verse 54)
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ۬ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ يُغۡشِى ٱلَّيۡلَ ٱلنَّہَارَ يَطۡلُبُهُ ۥ حَثِيثً۬ا وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ وَٱلنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَٲتِۭ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۤۗ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلۡخَلۡقُ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُۗ تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ (٥٤)
Translation
Indeed, your Lord is Allah , who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds.
سُوۡرَةُ یسٓ (Chapter 36 Verse Number 37)
وَءَايَةٌ۬ لَّهُمُ ٱلَّيۡلُ نَسۡلَخُ مِنۡهُ ٱلنَّہَارَ فَإِذَا هُم مُّظۡلِمُونَ (٣٧)
Translation
And a sign for them is the night; We strip it of the day and lo, they are in darkness.

The metaphorical usage of “نَسۡلَخُ” in the given verse signifies the removal or stripping away of the day (light) from the night, resulting in darkness, much like the act of skinning an animal involves removing its outer layer. This metaphor highlights God’s power in controlling the universe, particularly the cycle of day and night. The word نَسۡلَخُ is derived from the root “س ل خ” which literally means “to strip off” or “to skin.” In a literal sense, it is used for the act of skinning an animal.
