Quranic Supplications (Du’as)-أدعية

04/03/2026

The Holy Qur’an, regarded by Muslims as the literal word of God, contains numerous supplications (du’as) that serve as spiritual blueprints for believers. These prayers are not merely historical accounts of the prophets but are considered timeless formulas for seeking divine intervention, mercy, and guidance. According to the Encyclopedia of the Qur’an, these supplications often begin with the vocative “Rabbana” (Our Lord) or “Rabbi” (My Lord), emphasizing the personal and sustaining relationship between the Creator and the created

Dua (Arabic: دعاء, plural: ad‘iyah أدعية) means “supplication,” “invocation,” or “calling out” to God (Allah) in Islam. It is a deeply personal, informal, and spontaneous act of worship, representing a direct, intimate conversation between a believer and their Creator. Unlike formal prayer (Salah), it can be performed anywhere

1) Supplication of Adam (7:23)

Transliteration:

Rabbanaa ẓalamnaa anfusanaa wa in lam taghfir lanaa wa tarḥamnaa lanakoonanna minal-khaasireen.

Translation:

They replied, “Lord, we have done injustice to our souls. If You will not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall certainly have incurred a great loss.

Context

This duʿāʾ was made after Adam and Hawwa (Eve) ate from the forbidden tree and realized their mistake. It is a powerful prayer of:

  • Repentance
  • Admitting one’s wrongdoing
  • Seeking forgiveness and mercy

It is one of the most important Qur’anic supplications for tawbah (repentance).

2) Supplications of Noah

(23:29)

Transliteration:

Translation:

And say, ‘My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].’ “

Context:
This duʿāʾ was made after the Ark settled following the flood — asking Allah for a blessed place to settle.

(71:28)

Transliteration:

Rabbi ighfir lī wa li-wālidayya wa liman dakhala baytiya muʾminan wa lil-muʾminīna wal-muʾmināt, wa lā tazidiẓ-ẓālimīna illā tabārā.

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.

3) Supplications of Abraham

Prophet Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi as-salām) has several beautiful duʿās in the Qur’an. Below are the main ones.

(2:127–128) — While Raising the Kaʿbah

Translation:

Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

(14:35)

Translation:

77-Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds. 78-Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me. 79-And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink. 80- And when I am ill, it is He who cures me. 81-And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life. 82-And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense. 83-[And he said], “My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.. 84-And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations. 85-And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure. 86-And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray. 87-And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected. 88-The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children. 89-But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.

Themes in Ibrahim’s Duʿās

  • Acceptance of deeds
  • Righteous offspring
  • Protection from shirk
  • Establishing prayer
  • Forgiveness
  • Honor in this world and success in the Hereafter

4) Supplications of Zechariah (Zakariyyā

Prophet Zakariyyā made heartfelt duʿās asking Allah for righteous offspring despite his old age.

(3:38)

Translation:

4-He said, “My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy. 5-And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir. 6- Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You].

Lessons from Zakariya’s Duʿāʾ

  • It is never too late to ask Allah
  • Expressing weakness is part of humility
  • Asking specifically for righteous offspring
  • Trusting that Allah hears every duʿāʾ

Allah answered his prayer with the birth of Prophet Yaḥyā (John,

5) Supplications of Moses (Mūsā

Prophet Mūsā made many powerful duʿās in the Qur’an, especially during times of difficulty and mission.

(20:25–28) — Before Confronting Pharaoh

(28:24) — When He Fled to Madyan

Translation:

[Moses] said, “My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful.”

Themes in Mūsā’s Duʿās

  • Seeking confidence and clarity in speech
  • Asking for ease in difficult missions
  • Expressing complete dependence on Allah
  • Praying for forgiveness and mercy

These duʿās are often recited before speeches, exams, daʿwah, or difficult responsibilities.

6) Supplication of Jonah (Yūnus

(21:87)

Transliteration:

Lā ilāha illā anta, subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.

Translation:

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Context

Prophet Yūnus made this duʿāʾ while inside the belly of the whale, in complete darkness — the darkness of the sea, the night, and the whale.

Allah says immediately after (21:88):

“So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.”

Why This Duʿāʾ Is Powerful

This supplication contains three powerful elements:

  1. Tawḥīd – Affirming Allah’s Oneness
  2. Tasbīḥ – Declaring Allah free of imperfection
  3. Tawbah – Admitting one’s wrongdoing

It is one of the greatest duʿās for:

  • Distress
  • Anxiety
  • Hardship
  • Seeking forgiveness

7) Supplication of Job (Ayyūb

(21:83)

Transliteration:

Wa Ayyuba idh nada rabahu innī massaniyaḍ-ḍurru wa anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.

Translation:

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

Context

Prophet Ayyūb (Job) suffered:

  • Severe illness
  • Loss of wealth
  • Loss of family

Yet he remained patient and never complained against Allah.
Instead of demanding relief, he simply described his condition with humility and affirmed Allah’s mercy.

Allah responded immediately (21:84):

So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allah].

Lessons from This Duʿāʾ

  • Speak to Allah with humility
  • Do not complain about Allah — complain to Allah
  • Patience brings divine relief
  • Even a short duʿāʾ can carry immense power

This is one of the greatest duʿās for:

  • Illness
  • Hardship
  • Emotional distress
  • Long-term trials

8) Supplications of Solomon (Sulaymān

Prophet Sulaymān made beautiful duʿās expressing gratitude and asking for righteous action and unique blessings.

(27:19) — Duʿāʾ of Gratitude

Transliteration:

Rabbi awziʿnī an ashkura niʿmataka allatī anʿamta ʿalayya wa ʿalā wālidayya,
wa an aʿmala ṣāliḥan tarḍāh,
wa adkhilnī biraḥmatika fī ʿibādikaṣ-ṣāliḥīn.

Translation:

So [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said,

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants.”

(38:35) — Duʿāʾ for a Unique Kingdom

Rabbi ighfir lī wa hab lī mulkan lā yanbaghī li-aḥadin min baʿdī, innaka antal-Wahhāb.

  • It is permissible to ask for great things — if the intention is sincere

9) Supplication of the Believers (2:201)

(2:201)

Transliteration:

Wa Minhum Man Yaquwlu:

Rabbanaa ātinaa fid-dunyā ḥasanah,
wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah,
wa qinaa ʿadhāban-nār
“.

Translation:

But among them is he who says,

“Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

Why This Duʿāʾ Is So Comprehensive

This is one of the most complete and balanced duʿās in the Qur’an because it asks for:

  • Good in this world
(health, knowledge, lawful provision, righteous family, success)
  • Good in the Hereafter
    (forgiveness, mercy, Paradise)
  • Protection from Hellfire

It covers everything beneficial without specifying limits — leaving the goodness to Allah’s wisdom.

Note

This was one of the most frequently recited duʿās by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during ḥajj and in daily supplication.

10) Supplication of the Angels (40:7)
